ChatGPT Ads: How They Work, What They Cost, and Why an Ad Is Not the Answer
ChatGPT ads are paid placements that OpenAI shows below ChatGPT's answers. Testing started in the United States on 9 February 2026, and as of October 2026 businesses in 63 countries can buy them through a self-service tool, OpenAI Ads Manager.
What an ad cannot do is change the answer above it. OpenAI says so in plain words, and it is the fact that should shape your budget. Below: how ChatGPT ads work, what they cost, how to buy them, and when paying makes more sense than earning a place in the answer.
What are ChatGPT ads?
OpenAI announced the plan on 16 January 2026: "In the coming weeks, we're also planning to start testing ads in the U.S. for the free and Go tiers." Its help center confirms the start date: "Ad testing started in the United States on February 9, 2026."
Each ad is matched to the conversation. OpenAI weighs the chat's context and intent, the ad's copy and landing page, the advertiser's targeting and, with personalization on, the user's wider ChatGPT use. Among eligible ads, factors including relevance and bid set the order. OpenAI still calls this a test, so expect details to change.
Where ChatGPT ads appear, and who sees them
OpenAI's rules for ads in ChatGPT, as of October 2026:
- Position: "Ads can appear below the end of a response. Ads are clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from ChatGPT's response."
- Plans: ads may appear on Free and Go. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not get ads.
- Age: no ads for accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18.
- Topics: no ads near personal health, mental health or politics, and no political advertising.
- Temporary Chats: no ads.
- Regions: OpenAI is rolling ads out "to eligible users on the Free and Go plans in select regions." Personalized ads are not initially available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland.
- Privacy: advertisers do not see chats. They get aggregated reporting, such as total views and clicks.
What do ChatGPT ads look like?
OpenAI's advertiser basics page lists six parts in every ad: advertiser name, favicon, title, description, landing page and an image. One ad unit can show items from one advertiser or from several. For real ChatGPT ads examples, OpenAI's own ads site names Newegg, Best Buy, Lowe's and VistaPrint among its early advertisers.
How to buy ChatGPT ads: the Ads Manager
ChatGPT ads are bought in OpenAI Ads Manager Beta, at ads.openai.com. Self-service depends on where your business is registered: "the legal entity that will advertise and be billed must be based in a country listed as available." OpenAI's availability page lists 63 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
- Create an account at ads.openai.com with an OpenAI login.
- Set up billing and verification. Campaigns do not deliver until billing is in place.
- Create a campaign: objective, budget, dates and countries, plus optional platforms and custom audiences.
- Create ad groups with context hints, phrases that describe when your offer is relevant. OpenAI says they "are not exact-match keywords or targeting rules."
- Create ads and submit them for review. OpenAI's onboarding notice: "Your ads will go live once they pass review."
- Monitor results: impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM, and conversions if you set up measurement.
For most campaigns, targeting on this ads platform goes down to states, cities and postal codes where available, across five platforms: Android and iOS apps, Android and iOS web, and desktop web. A custom audience needs at least 25,000 matched users. Some new self-serve accounts can only advertise in their home country until verification and a spend threshold are met.
What ChatGPT ads cost
OpenAI publishes a pricing model, not a price list. You pick an objective, set a maximum bid per ad group, and an auction sets the price. In OpenAI's words: "We use a relevance-weighted, second-price auction to select among eligible ads."
| Objective | How you are billed |
|---|---|
| Views | Per 1,000 impressions (CPM), against a maximum CPM bid |
| Clicks | Per valid click (CPC), against a maximum CPC bid. OpenAI recommends starting at $3–$5 per click |
| Conversions | Per valid click (oCPC) or per 1,000 impressions (oCPM). "You do not pay per conversion" |
The floor is the minimum daily budget. As of October 2026 it is 25 USD, 15 GBP, 15 EUR, 65 AED or 50 SAR, depending on your billing currency. A daily budget is an average over seven days, and OpenAI says daily spend "will not exceed twice your selected daily budget."
So the honest answer to "how much do ChatGPT ads cost" is at least $25 a day, at whatever the auction clears. OpenAI's help pages give a suggested starting bid, not an average cost or click-through rate. Budget for a test, not a forecast.
Do ChatGPT ads influence the answers?
No, and OpenAI is unusually direct about it: "Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. Ads run on separate systems from our chat model, and advertisers have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses." It adds that, by default, "ChatGPT can't see the ads shown to you."
A ChatGPT ad sits under the answer. Paying never puts you inside it. If the answer names three competitors and gets your price wrong, your ad appears below an answer that disagrees with it.
| ChatGPT ad | Being in the answer | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it shows | Below the response, labelled sponsored | Inside the response, sometimes with a citation link |
| Who sees it | Free and Go users, never under-18 accounts, in regions where ads run | Users on every plan, including Plus, Pro and Business |
| How you get there | Win an auction | ChatGPT knows you from training data, or finds you in a web search |
| What you control | Budget, bid, copy, targeting | Whether OpenAI's search crawler can reach your pages, and whether your facts there are right |
| Cost | CPM or CPC, from $25 a day | No media cost. The work is access and accuracy |
ChatGPT ads vs organic AI visibility: when each makes sense
When paying makes sense
- You need to show up in a category now: a launch, a promotion, a seasonal push.
- Your buyers use the free tiers, and your business is registered in a self-service country.
- ChatGPT already describes you correctly, and you want reach on top of that.
- You can measure it. OpenAI supports UTM parameters on ad landing URLs and conversion tracking inside Ads Manager.
When to fix the answer first
- ChatGPT gets your price, product or ownership wrong. An ad does not correct the answer above it. Start with what ChatGPT says about your brand.
- Your buyers are on Plus, Pro or Business plans, which never see ads.
- OpenAI's search crawler cannot reach your site. ChatGPT cannot cite a page it cannot fetch, and no ad budget changes that.
The ad buys a slot under the answer. The answer decides what the reader thinks of you before they reach it.
Three checks before you spend on ChatGPT ads
- Read what ChatGPT says about you. Ask your buyers' questions with search on. Our guide to ChatGPT citations covers when it links a source and why.
- Check OpenAI's search crawler can reach you. OpenAI's condition is to "allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl the site and confirm that the website host or content delivery network allows traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses." Blocking GPTBot, the training crawler, is a separate choice; see GPTBot vs OAI-SearchBot.
- Let OAI-AdsBot reach your landing pages. OpenAI's crawler documentation says that when you submit an ad, it may visit the landing page "to ensure it complies with our policies," and may use the page's content to judge when the ad is relevant. A firewall that blocks unknown bots can stop that visit.
99Visibility audits five AI platforms (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude), tracks your competitors, checks the answers against the brand facts you enter, and checks whether AI crawlers can reach your site. Your first audit is free, with no credit card, and covers ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. See the plans for all five platforms. Inside the dashboard, Agent V reads your audits and your site and drafts the fix, such as page copy for you to paste. It never edits your site itself.
FAQ
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
At least 25 USD a day as of October 2026, bid per click or per 1,000 views in a second-price auction. OpenAI suggests starting at $3–$5 per click.
Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT's answers?
No. OpenAI states that advertisers "have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses." Ads appear below the answer, labelled as sponsored.
How do I stop seeing ads in ChatGPT?
