FAQ Pages: One Fact Per Answer, in Plain Text
An FAQ page is the one place on your site where you answer the exact questions customers ask AI — "how much does it cost," "does it integrate with X," "who owns it" — one fact per answer, in plain text. That is useful. It is not a citation lever: formatting-only changes have no measured effect, and FAQPage markup is retired. Here is the honest case.
What FAQ Pages Are Good For
- Stating a fact once, plainly — The audit finds wrong prices when your own site states them three ways. A single FAQ answer is one version of the truth to keep every other page in line with.
- Server-rendered text — FAQ answers are usually static HTML, which is what every non-Google AI crawler reads. Accordions that inject answers with JavaScript throw that away.
- Topical relevance — The one substantive factor three independent studies agree on. A page that answers the question is more relevant to the retrieval query than a page that mentions the topic.
- No platform claim — We have not measured FAQ pages outperforming other formats on any engine, and neither has anyone else with a control group.
How to Build AI-Optimized FAQ Pages
- Research real questions — Use Google's "People Also Ask," your support tickets, and sales call notes.
- Write concise answers — 2-4 sentences per answer. Include specific data points.
- Skip FAQPage schema — Google deprecated FAQ rich results on 2026-05-07 and removed the documentation. If you already have the markup, leave it; Google says it does no harm. Do not add it expecting anything.
- Place on relevant pages — Add FAQs to your pricing, product, about, and landing pages — not just a standalone FAQ page.
- Update quarterly — Add new questions, update answers with current data.
FAQ Template for AI Visibility
Structure each FAQ like this for maximum AI quotability:
- Question: Match the exact phrasing users would ask an AI.
- Answer sentence 1: Direct answer with a specific claim.
- Answer sentence 2: Supporting detail or data point.
- Answer sentence 3 (optional): Link to more detailed content.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many FAQs should I have per page?
5-10 per page is the sweet spot. Enough to cover key questions, not so many that they overwhelm the page or dilute quality.
Should every page have an FAQ section?
Every page where customers have questions should. Product pages, pricing pages and landing pages all benefit from a short section that answers them in plain text.
Does FAQ schema still work for SEO too?
No. Google deprecated FAQ rich results on 2026-05-07 and removed the FAQPage documentation on 2026-06-15; Search Console dropped API support in August 2026. The markup no longer produces anything in Google Search. Existing markup does no harm, per Google, but there is nothing to gain by adding it.
