Local businesses face a unique GEO challenge: AI platforms need to understand not just what you do, but where you are. When someone asks Perplexity "best Italian restaurant in downtown Austin," the AI needs to know your location, hours, menu, and reviews.

Why Local GEO Is Different

  • Location signals matter — Google Business Profile and consistent listings across local directories.
  • Reviews drive citations — AI platforms cite review data heavily for local recommendations.
  • Category specificity — "Best pizza" vs "best thin-crust pizza" — AI matches specificity.

What LocalBusiness schema actually does: it feeds Google's classic local-pack and Maps results — worth having for that. Google's own AI-features guidance says "there's no special schema.org markup you need to add" for generative AI search, and the only matched-control test we know of (Ahrefs, 1,885 pages) found no citation uplift from schema on any platform. Put your name, address, phone, and hours in visible page text — that's what an AI crawler can actually read.

Local GEO Checklist

  1. Claim and optimize Google Business Profile — This is the single most important local GEO action.
  2. Publish your NAP as visible text — Name, address, phone, and hours on the page itself, not only in schema. Add LocalBusiness schema too if you want the Maps/local-pack benefit, but the visible text is what carries to AI answers.
  3. Get listed in local directories — Yelp, TripAdvisor, industry-specific directories.
  4. Encourage and respond to reviews — Review volume and quality directly influence AI recommendations.
  5. Create location-specific content — "Best [service] in [city]" pages for each location you serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do AI platforms use location data?

Perplexity and Google AI do. ChatGPT uses location less directly but still references geographic information from its training data. Having consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across all platforms — as visible text, not just schema — helps all AI models.
