What Is Google AI Mode? How It Works, and What It Means for Your Brand
Google AI Mode is a separate mode inside Google Search. You ask a question in plain language, Google runs many searches for you at once, and you get one AI-written answer with links to the pages it drew on. Then you can ask follow-up questions. Google's help page calls it "Google's most powerful AI search experience".
Every claim below links to Google's own documentation, checked in October 2026. Google changes these features often.
What is AI Mode in Google Search?
Google's AI Mode help page says: "You can ask anything and get an AI-powered response, with the ability to go deeper through follow-up questions and helpful links to the web." You can ask with text, voice, images or files.
Google's guide for site owners says AI Mode "is particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed."
A short timeline
- 5 March 2025: launched as "an early experiment in Labs".
- 20 May 2025: rolled out in the US, "no Labs sign-up required".
- 19 May 2026: Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash "the new default model in AI Mode for everyone globally", and said AI Mode "has surpassed one billion monthly users". That figure is Google's own; nobody outside Google can check it.
Where is AI Mode available?
As of October 2026, Google's help page lists 248 countries and territories and 98 languages, including the US, the UK, Canada, India, Australia, every EU country, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Lebanon.
A stronger model, Gemini 4 Argon, is limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over, with daily limits. The "AI Mode" experiment in Search Labs requires you to be 18 or older and excludes Google Workspace accounts.
How to turn on AI Mode in Google Search
There is no switch. Where AI Mode is available, it is already on. Google lists three ways in:
- Go to google.com/ai.
- On google.com, type a question in the search bar and select AI Mode.
- In the Google app, tap AI Mode on the home screen.
In Chrome on a computer, you can also select AI Mode on the right of the address bar, or press Tab and then Enter. Google notes that AI Mode in Chrome "is not available to everyone or on every device at this time." If you can't find AI Mode, check your country and language against Google's list.
How AI Mode works: query fan-out
AI Mode does not run your question as one search. Google's help page says it uses a "query fan-out" technique, "dividing your question into subtopics and searching for each one simultaneously across multiple data sources." It then combines the results into one answer.
Two consequences for a brand:
- The searches AI Mode runs are not the words the user typed. Google writes them and documents no way for a site owner to see them. A tool that tracks "AI Mode prompts" measures a stand-in for queries it cannot observe.
- More pages can get a link. Google says fan-out lets it "display a wider and more diverse set of helpful links". Wider is not guaranteed: "Indexing and serving isn't guaranteed."
AI Mode vs AI Overviews
Both features sit inside Google Search, and both link to web pages. But Google says they "may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary."
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | At the top of a normal results page | In its own mode, which the user opens |
| When it appears | Only when Google decides it is "additive to classic Search", so it "often" does not trigger | Whenever you choose it. It may return web links instead if Google has low confidence in an AI answer |
| Follow-up questions | A follow-up moves you into AI Mode | Built in |
| Query fan-out | "May use" it | Uses it |
| Position in Search Console | Every link shares the overview's single position | Same method as a normal results page. Each follow-up counts as a new query |
Being cited in one tells you nothing certain about the other. Check them separately. For how AI Overviews pick sources, see our Google AI Overviews guide. To avoid both as a searcher, see how to turn off AI Overviews.
What a site owner controls in AI Mode
Google's rule is short: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." You control whether your pages are eligible, and how much of them Google may show.
- Be indexed and snippet-eligible. A page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet". Google adds that you don't need "new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup": no llms.txt file, no special schema markup for AI.
- Let Googlebot in. AI Mode has no robots.txt token of its own: "robots.txt directives for Googlebot is the control". Google also lists "Ensuring that crawling is allowed in robots.txt, and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure", so a firewall that blocks Googlebot blocks AI Mode too. Our AI crawler list covers other platforms' bots.
- Limit what Google shows. Google's robots meta tag documentation says
nosnippet"applies to all forms of search results (at Google: web search, Google Images, Discover, AI Overviews, AI Mode) and will also prevent the content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode."data-nosnippetcovers one section;max-snippetcaps the length. - Check the Search Console setting. The Search generative AI control includes or excludes a site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover's generative AI features. It reached all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026. Inclusion "is the default control for all properties", but a child property inherits its parent's setting, so check nobody excluded the parent.
Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Mode. Google says Google-Extended "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search." It covers Gemini training and grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI.
What Search Console reports for AI Mode, and what it doesn't
- Performance report: Google says AI Mode traffic is reported "within the 'Web' search type", mixed in with the rest of your search traffic. Per Search Console's help, "Clicking a link to an external page in AI Mode counts as a click", and a follow-up question is "essentially performing a new query".
- Generative AI performance report: rolled out to all websites as of 31 August 2026. It shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, date and device. Its help page describes no clicks, click-through rate or position.
- Search Labs: "Search Console doesn't include data from experiments in Search Labs".
Outside Search Console, nobody has Google's numbers. Google's guidance on third-party tools says: "Third-party tools don't have access to our internal ranking data." That includes us. Treat any third-party "AI Mode rank" as an estimate.
What AI Mode means for your brand
AI Mode needs no new playbook, only the old one without gaps: be indexed, be crawlable, and don't hide your own text by accident. Then read what it says about you. Google warns that AI Mode "may misinterpret web content or miss context".
99Visibility audits five AI platforms: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude. AI Mode is not one of the five, so check it by hand as well. Your first audit is free, with no credit card, and covers ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. See the plans for all five platforms. Inside the dashboard, Agent V reads your audits and your site and drafts the fix, such as page copy for you to paste. It never edits your site itself.
