Can You Track App Installs From ChatGPT? What Apple, Google and Your Own Links Can Show
No app store has an "AI assistant" channel. App Store Connect and Google Play Console were built for search, browse, ads and referrals, and an install that started in a ChatGPT answer lands in one of those buckets or in none.
That does not leave you blind. Your own deep links, campaign tokens, Apple's referrer filters and one documented MMP channel each catch part of it. This guide ranks them by how much you can trust the number, then lists what no tool can see today.
Why AI installs are hard to see
An AI answer can send someone to your app in three ways. It links your website, it links your store listing, or it names you and the reader searches the store themselves.
Each path breaks attribution in a different place. If your website URL is a Universal Link or an Android App Link, tapping it opens the app directly and your web analytics never record the visit. A direct store link meets the store's own referrer rules. A store search after reading an answer carries no trace of the answer at all.
What you can measure, most reliable first
1. Log the URL your app was opened with
When a Universal Link opens your iOS app, Apple passes the full URL in NSUserActivity.webpageURL, and its query string can be parsed. Apple's documentation says to use NSURLComponents to pull the components out.
On Android, the App Link URL arrives through intent.data, and Activity.getReferrer() names the app that launched it. Google warns that this referrer "can be spoofed", so treat it as a hint, not proof.
Log both as your own analytics event. OpenAI's publishers FAQ, as we recorded it on 22 August 2026, says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs. We could not re-fetch that page on 24 October 2026, so check a live link before you rely on it. Where the tag is present, it survives into the URL your app receives.
This is the most reliable AI signal an app has: first-party, no vendor, and exact for every tagged open.
2. Tag the hop from your website to the store
Many AI-referred readers land on your website first. Tag the route from that page to the store so it gets its own campaign:
- Apple: add a provider token (
pt=, one per developer account) and a campaign token (ct=, up to 30 characters) to store buttons and to your Smart App Banner. Apple supports both tokens on the banner. - Google Play: put a URL-encoded string in the
referrer=parameter of the Play link, 512 characters or less. Your app reads it once after install through the Install Referrer API, which returns the referrer plus the click and install timestamps. - Set the token server-side from the visitor's incoming referrer or UTM, so a reader who arrived from an AI answer taps through with a campaign such as
ct=ai-chatgpt.
Apple counts a first-time download within 24 hours of the campaign link tap. A campaign appears only once it has first-time downloads from at least five users. Play shows the result under "Ads and referrals", split by UTM source and UTM campaign.
3. Filter App Store Connect by referrer
App Store Connect splits acquisition into App Store Search, App Store Browse, App Referrer, Web Referrer, App Clip and campaigns. You can filter Web Referrer to a list of referring websites and App Referrer to a list of referring apps. The Analytics Reports API exports the same detail in the Discovery and Engagement report, where Source Info and Campaign are in the detailed report only.
The catch is Safari. Apple's definition: "For iOS apps, taps from websites in non-Safari web browsers, such as Chrome, are attributed as that web browser app in app referrers." A link tapped inside another app counts as an App Referrer.
Whether ChatGPT or Perplexity appears there by name is unknown. No AI vendor documents how its iOS app opens a store link, and Apple's in-app browser API hides what happens inside it from the host app. Pull the detailed report and check your own data.
4. Use an MMP that documents an AI channel
Branch documents an "organic chat agent" channel covering ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Perplexity, built on the same Universal Link and App Link opens as step 1. It reads UTMs and referrer domains, needs iOS SDK 1.39.4 or later and Android SDK 5.0.12 or later, and does not support Chrome on iOS. That is Branch's own documentation, not an independent test.
AppsFlyer announced AI-engine attribution through OneLink and Smart Script on 22 September 2026. We could not fetch the announcement, and we found no help-center documentation for it yet. We found nothing from Adjust or Singular, which does not prove they lack it.
5. Read your landing page's web analytics
GA4 has a default "AI Assistant" channel for visits from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok. It excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. It covers the web visit before the store tap, not the install.
6. Watch the proxies, and call them proxies
Branded search terms in Play Console and Apple Ads can rise after AI answers start naming you. Apple Ads shows a term only at 10 or more impressions a day, and only where your ad showed. These show correlation, never cause.
The cheat sheet
| Method | What you see | Where | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deep-link logging | Every app open from a tagged link, with its UTMs | Your own analytics | Only links that carry a tag; Android referrer can be spoofed |
| Campaign tokens | Installs from your own pages, by campaign | App Store Connect, Play Console | Apple: 5-user minimum, 24-hour window |
| Referrer filters | Referring websites and apps | App Store Connect, Analytics Reports API | Web referrers are Safari only; small rows withheld and noise added |
| MMP AI channel | Opens and installs tagged as AI | Branch (vendor doc) | Needs deep linking; no Chrome on iOS |
| GA4 AI Assistant | Web visits from AI chat tools | GA4 | Excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Branded search terms | Store search demand for your name | Play Console, Apple Ads | Correlation only |
What nobody can measure today
- AI Overviews and AI Mode installs. Google counts those clicks inside ordinary Search data, in the "Web" search type, and no store dimension separates them.
- Direct Play links. Play has no referring-website dimension, and Google does not document whether a plain
utm_sourceon a Play URL reaches your reports. - Untagged App Store links tapped outside Safari. They are credited to the browser app.
- Assistants that add no tag. We found no primary documentation that Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Copilot tag outbound links.
- Small apps. Apple drops rows under five users, Play groups small values as "Other", and Apple Ads hides terms under 10 daily impressions.
- Influence without a click. A reader who sees your name and later searches the store leaves no attributable trail.
You will never get a clean "installs from AI" number. You can get a floor you trust and a trend you can read.
Start with what AI says about your app
Tracking tells you what arrived. It cannot tell you why an assistant recommends a competitor, or describes your app wrong. Read how AI assistants recommend apps, then see when ChatGPT links a source at all.
FAQ
Does App Store Connect show ChatGPT as a source?
It can list referring websites and apps, but whether ChatGPT appears by name depends on how its app opens the link, which no vendor documents. Check the referrer filters in your own account.
Do UTM parameters work on App Store links?
No. Apple attributes campaigns through its provider and campaign tokens, pt= and ct=.
What replaced Firebase Dynamic Links?
Firebase Dynamic Links shut down on 25 August 2025 and now return 404. Google points to App Links and Universal Links, or a third party such as Adjust, AppsFlyer, Branch, Kochava or Singular.
