ChatGPT Shopping: How Products Get Into ChatGPT's Answers, and What Merchants Control
ChatGPT shopping is what ChatGPT shows when a question sounds like someone wants to buy: product cards with images, prices and links to the stores that sell them. OpenAI's help center puts it this way: "When your question suggests shopping intent (for example, "Help me find costumes for my dog"), ChatGPT can show product options with imagery, product details, and links to sites where you can learn more or purchase."
Everything below comes from OpenAI's own pages as of October 2026. Where two of them disagree, we say so. For AI product visibility beyond ChatGPT, see GEO for e-commerce.
How ChatGPT shopping results appear
Products show in a carousel. "A product appears in the carousel when ChatGPT perceives it to be relevant to your intent." Tap a product and ChatGPT lists the stores that sell it: "Merchants are ranked based on factors like availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller of that item."
Three details matter to merchants:
- Titles and labels can be rewritten. ChatGPT "may generate simplified product titles and descriptions", and labels like "Budget-friendly" are generated by the model. OpenAI calls them "not guarantees or verified statements."
- Review summaries come from public websites. "Reviews and ratings are not verified by OpenAI."
- Prices can lag. "When merchants update their pricing or shipping terms, there may be some delay before it is reflected in the information you see."
For bigger decisions there is shopping research, launched on 24 November 2025. It asks clarifying questions and returns a buyer's guide after a few minutes. OpenAI says its results "are organic and based on publicly available retail sites—reading product pages directly, citing sources, and avoiding low-quality or spammy sites." It also warns that shopping research "might make mistakes about product details like price and availability".
Where ChatGPT gets product data
| Source | What OpenAI says |
|---|---|
| Data providers | "Structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers (e.g., price, product description) and other third-party content" |
| Your product feed | Accepted from approved merchants, by application |
| Shopify and Etsy | "If you sell through Shopify or Etsy, your catalog is already integrated, and no additional setup or application is required." |
| Your product pages | Crawled. A feed is optional, but "feeds give you greater control over how your products appear" |
| Public review sites | The basis of the model-written review summaries |
| The model itself | "Model responses generated by ChatGPT before it considers any new search results" |
Your product page is one input among several, and it is the only one you fully control.
Can merchants submit a product feed?
Yes, by application. OpenAI's developer docs say: "Onboarding product feeds in ChatGPT is currently available to approved partners." The form is on OpenAI's merchants page, which adds: "If you've already applied, you're on the waitlist." As of October 2026, the same page says a self-serve merchant platform is coming "later this year".
The feed spec requires nine fields per item: item_id, title, description, url, brand, seller_name, image_url, availability and price. OpenAI recommends a full snapshot "at least daily". Two lines matter most: "Product and image URLs must be publicly accessible," and, on the search flag, "Eligibility does not guarantee display."
What does a feed buy you? The merchants page promises "better placement in results" and says richer data "helps your products surface with more accurate information when shoppers compare options." OpenAI publishes no numbers behind that. Treat a feed as a way to keep your price and stock correct, not as a measured ranking boost.
Are ChatGPT shopping results ads?
No, according to OpenAI: "Product results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships. Ads are separate from product results".
Ads do exist. Ad testing started in the US on 9 February 2026, for Free and Go users. Ads "can appear below the end of a response" and are "clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from ChatGPT's response." Advertisers can build product ads from a catalog, and the feed's ads flag is "Independent of search eligibility." Bidding and costs are in our guide to ChatGPT ads.
You cannot buy a place in ChatGPT's product results. You can buy the sponsored slot below the answer.
Which crawler fetches your product pages?
OpenAI does not name a shopping crawler. As of October 2026, its crawler page lists four agents and mentions shopping in none. Three matter here:
- OAI-SearchBot decides whether your site can appear in ChatGPT search: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers". OpenAI files its shopping help article under ChatGPT Search.
- ChatGPT-User visits a page when a user's question calls for it, and "Because these actions are initiated by a user, robots.txt rules may not apply."
- OAI-AdsBot "only visits pages submitted as ads".
The fourth, GPTBot, collects training data and has no documented role in shopping. More in GPTBot vs OAI-SearchBot.
One loose end: the shopping research announcement told merchants to "follow the allowlisting process" for ChatGPT's agent. As of October 2026 that link redirects to the allowlisting guide for ChatGPT Work's Cloud browser, which signs its requests so firewalls can verify them. OpenAI does not say whether shopping research still uses it.
Can shoppers buy inside ChatGPT?
OpenAI's pages disagree. Instant Checkout launched on 29 September 2025, letting US users "buy directly from U.S. Etsy sellers right in chat". As of October 2026, the merchants page says: "We're moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience in ChatGPT and prioritizing better shopping discovery and merchant-owned checkout experiences." It adds that "purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps."
The shopping help article, as of October 2026, still says ChatGPT "may also show an Instant Checkout option" for "some eligible products and merchants." The feed spec treats checkout as "a separately enabled integration." For planning, assume the sale happens on your own site. That is what the page written for merchants says.
The ChatGPT shopping checklist for merchants
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. Check the live file with a robots.txt tester.
- Allow it through your firewall too. OpenAI's rule for ChatGPT search has two parts: allow the crawler, and "confirm that the website host or content delivery network allows traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses."
- Put price, stock and product name in the HTML. Load the page with JavaScript off. If the price disappears, a crawler that skips JavaScript sees none. Vercel and MERJ found in 2024 that ChatGPT's crawler fetches JavaScript files but does not execute them.
- Make every source agree. Your page, feed and Shopify or Etsy catalog should show the same price and stock. ChatGPT draws on all of them.
- On Shopify or Etsy? Your catalog is already integrated. Keep the product data there accurate.
- Selling elsewhere? Apply for a direct feed on the merchants page, and prepare the nine required fields.
- Check what ChatGPT shows. Ask the shopping questions your customers ask, then check the price, the labels and the merchant list. OpenAI takes reports of "products that have incorrect information" through the menu on each product.
99Visibility covers the access and accuracy side. It checks whether AI crawlers can reach your site, audits five AI platforms (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude), tracks your competitors, and checks the answers against the brand facts you enter. Your first audit is free, with no credit card, and covers ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. See the plans for all five platforms. Inside the dashboard, Agent V reads your audits and your site and drafts the fix, such as page copy for you to paste. It never edits your site itself.
FAQ
Can you use ChatGPT for shopping?
Yes. Ask a shopping question and ChatGPT can show products with prices and store links. Shopping research builds a buyer's guide for bigger decisions. As of October 2026, OpenAI says shopping is live in the US.
Do merchants pay to appear in ChatGPT shopping?
OpenAI's answer to "Are there fees associated with product feeds?" is "There are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT." Ads are paid and sit apart from the product results.
Are ChatGPT shopping results sponsored?
No. OpenAI says product results "are not ads". Sponsored placements appear below the answer and are labeled.
