What Is AI SEO? The Two Things People Mean, and What Each Actually Changes

AI SEO is a phrase with two meanings, and the advice you find depends on which one the writer had in mind. The first is using AI tools to do search engine optimization faster: keyword research, drafting, clustering, reporting. The second is getting your brand and your pages into the answers that AI search gives: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. The first is a workflow. The second is a set of gates the platforms document, and most of what is sold under the name is neither.

People are asking. Google Ads data puts "what is AI SEO" at 480 searches a month in the US, and this July and August ran 395% above the same months a year earlier (our DataForSEO pull, 16 October 2026). This guide answers the question for both meanings, with the primary sources beside each claim.

Meaning 1: using AI to do SEO

This is how the big SEO vendors use the term. Semrush: "AI SEO is the practice of using AI tools to improve and streamline the SEO workflow" (11 ways to use AI for SEO, Cecilia Meis, 11 May 2026). Ahrefs does not define the phrase at all; its guide says "AI can help you do SEO, but it's also changing the industry as a whole" (14 Ways to Use AI for Better, Faster SEO, Ryan Law, 16 May 2024).

What it changes: the hours. Clustering a few thousand keywords, drafting a brief, summarising a crawl, writing title tags for a catalogue, turning a spreadsheet into a report. None of that needed AI, and all of it goes faster with it.

What it does not change: what Google rewards. Google's spam policies define scaled content abuse as "when many pages are generated for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings", judged "no matter how it's created", and list "using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users" as an example (Google Search spam policies, last updated 28 August 2026). The tool is allowed; the volume play is not. We watched that policy applied: Google deindexed 2,000 AI blog posts while Copilot kept citing them.

This is the newer meaning, and it goes by other names too: GEO (generative engine optimization), AEO (answer engine optimization), LLM SEO. The names differ more than the work does; AEO vs GEO vs SEO sorts them out. The work is getting an AI platform to find your pages, read them, and describe you correctly.

The platforms are unusually clear about what they require, and it is less than the industry suggests.

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." To be used as a supporting link, "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." (AI features and your website, Google Search Central, last updated 10 December 2025.) So the gate is the one you already know: indexed, with a snippet allowed.
  • ChatGPT search. OpenAI documents its search crawler's consequence directly: sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links" (OpenAI crawler documentation). The same page says GPTBot, the training crawler, is a separate switch that does not affect search. Which bot to allow is covered in GPTBot vs OAI-SearchBot vs ChatGPT-User.
  • Perplexity. Perplexity documents PerplexityBot as its search crawler and states it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models (Perplexity crawler guide). Block it and your pages leave the index it answers from.
  • Claude. Anthropic describes Claude-SearchBot as improving search result quality but does not state the consequence of blocking it outright (Anthropic's crawler article). The likely result, blocked pages staying out of Claude's search results, is our inference, and we label it as one.

Put those together and the second meaning of AI SEO has four stages, and you control two of them. The model's memory answers from training data you cannot change this quarter. Access, whether a crawler can reach and index your page, is almost entirely yours. Retrieval, which pages a platform picks for a question, depends on whether the page answers it. Generation, what the model writes and cites, depends on whether the facts on your pages are right and agree with each other. LLM SEO: what actually changes what AI says about you walks each stage with its evidence.

Most products sold as "AI SEO tools" serve the first meaning. Most agencies selling "AI SEO" are selling the second, often with promises the platforms' own documentation does not support; hiring an AI SEO agency lists seven of those promises.

What the evidence supports, and what it does not

For the second meaning, the levers with documentation behind them are subtractive: each one removes a block, and none of them makes a page more likely to be chosen.

  1. Allow the search crawlers you want, bot by bot. OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot each have their own user agent; a blanket block removes you from that platform's search. Check yours with the free robots.txt checker, which reads the file the way each bot does.
  2. Confirm your firewall agrees with your robots.txt. A 403 from a CDN or bot-protection rule cancels whatever robots.txt allows, and nothing in your own browser shows it. The site-health scan requests your page as each crawler and reports where robots.txt says yes and the host says no.
  3. Be indexed, with a snippet allowed. That is Google's whole requirement for AI Overviews and AI Mode. It is also where sites quietly fail: when we audited our own site, Google indexed 39% of it.
  4. Get the facts right on the pages that state them. Pricing, founding date, location, what the product does. A model that retrieves a wrong page repeats it with confidence; the pricing page is the usual offender.
  5. Check what the platforms actually say. Not what you hope. The free AI visibility checker asks them and shows the answers.

What the evidence does not support, as of the documentation above: that schema markup, an llms.txt file, E-E-A-T signals, content freshness or a particular writing format causes an AI platform to cite you. Each has been checked against primary sources in schema markup for AI, what llms.txt is and who reads it, E-E-A-T for AI search and 20 popular GEO tactics checked against the evidence. Some are good practice for other reasons. None is a documented AI ranking lever, and this post does not claim one.

FAQ

Is AI SEO the same as GEO?

In the second meaning, yes: GEO, AEO, LLM SEO and AI SEO all describe getting AI search to find and describe you correctly. In the first meaning, no: that is using AI to do ordinary SEO work. Ask which one a writer or vendor means before you take the advice.

Does AI-written content hurt SEO?

Google's spam policies judge pages by purpose and value, "no matter how it's created". AI drafting is allowed; generating many pages "without adding value for users" is the named example of scaled content abuse. The tool is not the risk. The volume play is.

Do I need an AI SEO tool?

For the workflow meaning, a general model plus your existing data covers most of it. For the AI search meaning, you need to see what the platforms say about you and whether their crawlers can reach your site, which no writing tool shows. Best AI SEO tools, by job sorts the market by which meaning each tool serves, with prices read off the vendors' pages.
