Not Sure Which Keywords to Track

Your audit is only as useful as the questions it asks. How to choose and add keywords that show where AI answers leave you out.

You have an empty keyword list, or a list that keeps telling you what you already know. Keywords are the questions 99Visibility puts to each AI platform for you, so the wrong ones give you a confident answer to the wrong question.

Likely causes

  • Every keyword names your brand. "What is Acme?" tests whether AI knows you exist, not whether it recommends you to someone who has never heard of you.
  • The keywords read like SEO fragments. "acme crm pricing 2026" is not how people talk to ChatGPT.
  • There are too few. With three keywords, one odd answer moves your whole score.

Fix it

  1. Open Keywords in the sidebar. The page is called Keywords & Prompts.
  2. In Add prompts, type a question a buyer would ask before they know you, for example "best payroll software for startups". Press Enter to add it, or paste a list with one question per line and click Add.
  3. Keep each one under 100 characters. The box refuses longer ones with "over 100 characters — shorten it to add."
  4. Use the Suggested chips under the box. Hover a chip to see where it came from: "From your last audit", "From your website" or "Common in your industry". Generate prompts from your website reads your site and proposes more.
  5. Run an audit. Keywords you add count from the next audit on.

A mix that works

  • Category questions that don't name you: "best [category] for [audience]". These show whether you get recommended.
  • Problem questions: "how do I [problem you solve]".
  • Comparison questions: "[competitor] alternatives", "[you] vs [competitor]".
  • A few brand questions such as "how much does [you] cost". These are where wrong prices and dates show up, which the accuracy check catches.

Pull wording from your support tickets and sales calls. The AI platforms rewrite a question before they search, so treat each keyword as a sample of what buyers ask, not the exact query they run.

How many you can add

The limit counts active keywords per brand: 5 keywords on Free, 25 keywords on Starter ($49/mo), 50 keywords on Growth ($99/mo) and 100 keywords on Pro ($149/mo), plus any bonus slots you have earned. Pausing a keyword frees its slot. Hit your keyword limit covers pausing and deleting.
